The Citizens' Floodwatch
Mission Statement:
Solve the Mendenhall Glacier Flooding Crisis by invoking action in decision makers, government officials, community leaders, the private sector, and the general public.
Purpose:
Our purpose is to prevent impact to life and safety, prevent future losses of property, and prevent negative primary or secondary economic impacts due to flooding of the Mendenhall River.
Future glacial outbursts pose significant risk to both health, safety, and economic prosperity. The potential for future changes in the glacier’s form, the potential for additional basins to contribute increase the risk to residents significantly.
This organization exists as a result of inaction and lack of communication from government, where a concerned group of citizens see numerous actions that can be taken immediately or in the near future, that in total will create a multi-phased approach to a permanent and multifaceted solution to the annual flooding of the Mendenhall River.
What we do:
Educate and invoke elected officials to take swift action.
Work with local, state, and federal leaders in government and the private sector.
Educate the public on viable options to solve this problem, this can be solved.
Disseminate, through our website, social media and a mailing list, including information on events, public meetings, resources, and opportunities to be heard.
Advocate on behalf of impacted peoples, amplifying calls for action.
Provide coordination, categorizing, and warehousing of ideas and information.
Guard against the potential for more severe future glacial outflow issues.
